Myrnal gave a short sigh, the closest she could come to a laugh. At least for once Hakaril had done as he was told and found himself a lifeboat. She hadn't gotten her friend killed after all. She'd have to think of a way to blame herself for the death of his "first mate" later. For now she really didn't have the strength for those kind of psychological acrobatics.
The ninja reached out for the rope he'd tossed, and slowly closed her fingers around it. The high charging through her system on a wave of anger and terror was riding the tide back out again, and soon she wouldn't have any strength left. If she hesitated she would be wasting Hakaril's time. She'd die with or without his efforts.
She closed her eyes and pulled her arm in slowly, dragging herself closer to the lifeboat until she was finally near enough to touch it. She reached up to the edge of the boat, and suddenly the effort required loomed over her as completely impossible.
If you don't do it, he's just going to bitch at you until you do, she thought.
With a deep breath, she managed to pull herself over the edge up to about the chest, took one more breath, and simply heaved herself into the boat. It was a sign of her exhaustion that the agile and graceful ninja was content simply to drag herself into the first solid vessel she found.
With one arm stretched along the side, she leaned over and rested her arm on her shoulder. "You see anyone else?" she asked tiredly.

Hakaril scanned the horizon, glad that the fog had dispersed, though it was closing in again. It was as though the fog had a will of its own, breaking apart before the ship was ravaged and now swarming back in to obscure the remnants as they sunk into the briny depths. He and Myrnal had been separated from Somnia, and that aggravating elvish woman was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps she had drowned. Hakaril wasn't sure whether he was concerned about it.
Oh, thought Hakaril. There's someone. Someone flailing about clumsily in the water, desperately trying to maintain buoyancy. Hard to see, but out there.
He wasn't sure how, but somehow he knew it was Somnia.
"Yeah," he replied, "somebody's over there." He pointed. "I think we should go pick them up." The mage tossed his ninja companion an oar. "If your arms still work, help me row."

Somnia
|
This feels much better
The velvet darkness swarmed throughout Somnia's mind, only a distant whisper of the waves that seemed separated from reality disturbing her from this moment of bliss, some sweet grace of the mind that crept within her thoughts, dragging away every aspiration, fear and fury that would disturb her. Every breath felt cool, the passing between the realms of awareness and dream blending into one enormous sea that wouldn't dare drown her.
It's so noisy outside...why do I always try to wake up?
Her gently rocking body lulled her deeper into the grasp of a smooth, mental darkness, the blank world around of her slowly swirling into a cream of azure stars amongst a field of midnight blue. This was her life, for as long as she knew it. Endlessly drifting in a sea of misfortune, luck, happiness, fury, anticipation and adventure. Nothing was ever given to her, but her life wasn't at all difficult, all considering. As she pondered her life, the skies seemed to pull apart as rumbling chamber doors of whispering mist that opened to a darkness filled with dim, distant jewels.
This is just as good a time to stop as any...
The jewels dancing with dusted light, spilling into the slowly brightening ocean amongst the realm world. She could see the wreckage around her, the twinkling waters that swirled amongst the lands. Even the shores came into view, empty of life save for the swaying trees that danced in a perpetual breeze. As if turning to night, the color of day became drained from everything around her, spilling into the ground and the sea into great waves of brilliant hues that seemed to collide amongst the girl's body. As the colors of day swirled into a blanket of night, Somnia could feel her body simply let go of the string of life that held her against the few worldly worries that kept her bound.
As her sword fell into the dark reaches of the seas, she could feel a new freedom washing across her soul. Amidst her re freshening calm, she felt a part of her spirit breaking its chains from her as the blade disappeared from sight.

Myrnal Shalienza
|
Leaning tiredly over the side of the boat, Myrnal saw a few stray bubbles hit the surface and pop. Air. So someone was down there after all... Even as Myrnal's muscles protested the notion that they be required to do anything of any sort, Myrnal placed one hand over the end of the oar's handle and shoved it down below the water to give the person beneath her something to grab onto.
"Hakaril," she said. "I'm going to need a hand, or trying to pull someone up is going to... leave me down in the... the water with them."
