Altair released the vase from his hold and it crashed to the ground, the tiny jade pieces scattering about like petals of a rose. As the couple stood in stunned silence, Altair sprung from his hiding place and dashed across the yard, past the house. He turned the corner and raced towards Demetri whose horse was silhouetted by the pale kiss of the moon’s rays.
Quickly he untied the rope from the pole, allowing the fisherman’s boat to be rowed out. He stepped onto the wooden bottom and settled down.
With a look of acknowledgement to Demetri, Altair removed his map and studied it for a short time.
“Head east and keep bearing as you go. We should reach Tarsis by dawn,”
As Demetri rowed the boat out, Altair allowed himself one last look at Míriel, the city of wonders.
Goodbye fair lady. I should not be seeing you again.
