Re: Milaya mama! Nyezhnaya! Myi tak lyubili tebya.
Joss didn't seem to notice the tiny god of chaos playing in his shadow, but rather stopped eating to inspect his grilled cheese sandwich. "It's good." He pulled it close to his face to analyze it more closely. "I think it has more than one kind of cheese, which is kind of cool." He broke off his assessment to tear off a huge piece of the sandwich, devouring it. In a matter of seconds the sandwich was gone. He grabbed the glass of milk and it likewise disappeared.
Alya seemed to be exercising a little more restraint, or perhaps she'd eaten more recently. At the very least, she was consuming her food like a person rather than a black hole.

Re: From the Ashes (board and/or AIM D&D)
"... you know, Joss, you should probably chew your food a bit better." Damian quipped with a chuckle, wiping just a bit of orange sauce off of his lip. For a bit Damian was at a loss for what would be a safe topic here. That is to say, he found it rather difficult to find a NICE way to ask how their time with Dawn was. Or even IF he should now. Finally, he decided to just stick to the food.
"Just remember to save some room for desert. Its bound to be good."

"I wouldn't be surprised if it contained multiple kinds of cheese. Bailey is a culinary genius." Compliments from James were a little more rare than from most other people; it was obvious that the half-incubus was a huge fan of anyone willing to conjure him whatever he wanted to eat.
"Anyway, we get some rest, and then we head out. It's time that we finished this whole thing."

Re: From the Ashes (board and/or AIM D&D)
Joss set down his glass and gazed at James for a moment across the table. He nodded. "Yeah. I told you that I'd help you. I don't know how much I know, since the disciples aren't allowed in a lot of places. Some of the area is okay, which means that even the young kids are okay to be there, but even I haven't been everywhere."
Alya swallowed a bite of her meal, which she was still eating like a civilized little nine year old lady. "The white walls."
"Yeah," Joss agreed. "In the areas that are safe for the kids, the rules are really simple so that even the littler ones can remember. If you see a white wall, that's where you have to be. Nothing else matters, so if you see other stuff that says otherwise, I think it's usually just there to distract you. Alya, what else?"
She stared down into her plate for a moment, as if the noodles were a recognized authority on the evil bases of villainous cult leaders. "I know there's a room where you can't talk. I don't know where, but I heard it mentioned once. Danwn was talking about how he always got himself into trouble in there."
Joss nodded, with a tight and bitter little smile. "Yeah. He talks a lot. I remember him. He wasn't so bad. Taught Rilla to play thimblerig." He gave a dry laugh, which faded quickly. "Be careful of him, though. I don't know what he does, and that should tell you something."

Damian had to wonder at that. Either way this would prove troublesome. "Since you don't know what this Danwn can do, can you tell me at least a little bit about how he acts normally? Anything that's usual for him... or unusual?"

Re: From the Ashes (board and/or AIM D&D)
Joss shrugged. "I don't know. He's... chatty. Full of stories and jokes and really anything he can think of to say when there's a moment of dead air in a conversation. I know part of his job is to protect the kids, since Glinss't was Dawn's personal bodyguard. Not that either the other disciples or Dawn need a guard, but there you have it." He sighed. "Danwn is-- was, I don't know. He was a fun guy. I don't know if you've met Rilla, but she's kind of jumpy. Danwn was really the only guy she'd tolerate besides her brother."
Alya's eyebrows drew together in mild distress. "...I liked Danwn. He talked funny and was always laughing about something."
Joss sighed again. "Yeah. Yeah, he was. Still. You guys be careful, all right? He's there to protect the other disciples. I don't think it will get really bad unless you walk into a group of them swinging weapons and throwing spells, but you never know."

midterms can bite me
Lym sat silently, wholly disinterested in food and conversation.
The trouble he had with the group was that they seemed to have a little too much space between decision and action -- between ideas and behaviors. They let themselves worry and suffer and laugh too much in the midst of troubling times, allowing complications and distractions into days that had to be reduced to their absolute most simple components for safety and sanity's sake.
He could not, in short, forget or lay aside the strange and terrible circumstances, the painful commitments, the potential horrors. This moment, and every moment preceeding it since he had first encountered Dawn, was the staying of a sword. It was the back swing. The arm which held the sword was tense, and ready to complete the action.
He was tense, and ready to finish this, and it ached every second that he wasn't finishing.

Timelaps ahoy =O
After several minutes of walking the halls to clear his mind.
...and punching random walls.
Stephan finally feels somewhat calm enough to join the rest of the group. He has a hunch they're talking about the upcoming conflict, and that being there would be a wise idea at some point. Assuming he and Lym didn't come to magical/psionic blows...
After stopping back in Lee's office for directions, Stephan makes his way to the dining area. Silently to himself, he hopes they can make something resembling normal food. He wasn't in the mood for any of the crazy shit he'd heard Hakaril mention in passing before...

Re: Timelaps ahoy =O
"Nice of you to join us, Stephan," remarked James, swallowing a mouthful of flour tortilla-wrapped steak, hot sauce, and vegetables. "Sit down, have a fajita. They're excellent."
"So, to summarize what we know, the areas in Dawn's fortress with white walls are safe, because it's constructed to allow children to wander about relatively uninjured as long as they follow simple rules. Danwyn is chatty and no one's really sure what he's capable of aside from being a hardcore dangerous babysitter or something." James paused, drank deeply from a mug of some quite likely alcoholic beverage, and then stared into the glass longingly. "Ah, Inustani beer is one of those things that you just have to appreciate. Especially that lime finish."
"As soon as Stephan grabs something to eat, I'm in favor of action. We've been deliberating long enough, and it seems like we know everything we can. It's time to strike a blow for the future."

Re: Timelaps ahoy =O
Joss refilled his glass of milk yet again with a nod to Stephan as he passed the doorway. Myrnal gave a brief salute with the fajita she was working on before going back to her meal.
Eve tapped the table with her fingertips for a moment. "You know, as much as I'd like to head out right this second, I would honestly rather have a chance to rest before we go. I realize that everyone else is itching to go fight the things that must be destroyed in the name of justice and things... but you people haven't been being teleported all over hell for nothing. I'm actually kind of tired at this point, and I don't feel like storming my sister's evil base of operations or whatever half-spent at the start. Hate to be the wet blanket, but it would be super nice if we could hold off for a few hours in the interests of me not being damn-near helpless by the time we get to her."
Joss shrugged. "Whenever you go, just keep an eye out for Danny. He's really small, so he usually hangs out with the kids. You'll definitely know him if you see him, so no worries there."
"Great," Eve commented. "My sister's tiny bodyguard for her juvenile army. Anyway, I'd rather we hold off until first thing tomorrow morning. Hell, we can set out at daybreak if you want. I'd just rather get some rest first."

Stephan nods back to Myrnal and Joss, taking a seat nearby and looking over the abundant food available for consumption. While eyeing a paticular bit of Chocobo to cut out for himself, he picks up on the small exchange regarding this 'Danny' kid.
"...bloody wonderful..." he sighs to himself. Tempting as it is to get into a self demoralizing train of thought regarding child murder again, he decides now is not the time to dwell on it. So instead, he decides to ask a very relevant and important question of the others.
"...so is all this safe to eat, or what?"
With all the crazy stories he'd heard about Gunnir over the years, he wants to avoid eating anything that may make him turn green, grow tentacles, or start blessing people in the name of the loving Goddess Ishtar.

Re: post
Joss nodded and drained half of his glass of milk in one long drink. He tapped his hands on the table for a second or two and looked at his empty plate. Some incredibly relevant decision worked its way through his mind and he grabbed one of the steak fajitas from the pile to claim it for himself. "It's fine, Stephan."
Alya finished the last of her dinner, occasionally glancing over to Stephan. The swordmage didn't seem to be bothering her as much as he was before, and Kei at least would know why. The girl seemed to have a tendency to avoid anyone with difficulty controlling their emotions. Unfortunately this meant much of the party was off-limits as far as Alya was concerned.
Eve chewed her bottom lip a little, but apparently she wasn't ready to discuss whatever was on her mind at this point. "I'm going to get some tea and then I'm going to bed early. You guys do whatever you want. I'm sure Lym will wake me up when it's time to go." With that, she acquired a mug in shifting hues of pink and brown apparently filled with tea and took it with her out the door. From what she'd said, she was probably headed back to the room Lee had reserved for her and Lym.
Myrnal sighed. "Well, I'll probably hang out here for a little while longer yet. After that, I don't know. If anybody needs something sharpened I'll be in my room. I'm sure I'll hear voices in my head tomorrow morning when it's time to go. That seems to be the routine."

James nodded at Eve. "Resting is a good idea. I wouldn't want my incredible power to be compromised as a result of lack of sleep." He grinned a little, showing off his teeth yet again, and then proceeded to tear into another fajita. "As soon as I finish this one, I'm going to bed. Someone wake me up if I don't get up myself."

Stephan makes no attempt to hide his expression, rolling his eyes at James' blatant ego stroking.
"...eh, guess I'll be filling myself up before turning in." he tells the group, taking bites of some roasted chocobo, "Long as you're not drunk, hung over, or in a coma in the morning, we should be good."

"That's always a good plan," Kei said to Stephan, in between small bites of fajita. While the food was certainly delicious, she didn't have much of an appetite. She cleared her throat, and turned towards the children. "Before we rest, though, is there anything special about the children's guard that we should know about? You mentioned that he was small, but is there anything in particular he's trained for?"

Joss shrugged. "Dunno. We've never needed him. He's always just kind of hung around to do recon around the estate." He glanced down into his food briefly before returning Kei's eye contact. "He's the one who told us you were coming, but it was always Glinss't who talked to visitors."
Alya looked from Kei to Joss. "He's a pixie, I think. He's mentioned it before. That's why he's so small." She pushed her plate away and turned to the pyrokineticist next to her. "Also, um. I was talking to Archmagus Lee while I was eating. He has a room for us. We'll stay here. 'kay?"
Joss nodded. "That's fine. You guys be careful, all right?"

Lym followed Eve, silent and moody. He waved nonchalantly over his shoulder as he left.
As they walked he avoided physical contact -- not that he figured she'd mind, really.

Eve nodded, and didn't seem to be particularly bothered by the slight distance Lym was creating. Maybe Eve was more comfortable that way, for whatever reason. "That's fine. I feel the same way. I think I'm just going to go to bed."
As they got to the room, she held the door open behind him so Lym could also enter their appointed space.
"I don't feel like doing more things right now. I'll be ready to go tomorrow morning. Do what you've got to do."

Lym walked in after her and sat down cross-legged on the floor.
He thought really, incredibly hard about the following questions:
1) Is bringing Eve safe for her?
2) What should I be on the look out for with this creepy pixy?
3) What does Bailey like to have for breakfast?
4) How do I learn the meaning of life?

Re: post
1. As Lym probably already knew before he asked, Eve would be less safe in the base of the woman who was planning to sacrifice her to dark gods than she would be at Gunnir. Then again... so would everyone else. Bringing Eve with the party is certainly no safer than bringing, say... Stephan. Or Damian. Or Lyminali himself.
2. He's nothing that Lyminali is totally unfamiliar with. Lym isn't likely to turn his back on his enemies as a common strategy, but with Danny it's especially important. He's opportunistic the way several of Lym's current allies seem to be.
3. Usually some form of elaborate pastry, though he has a real love for Rivan grits.
4. By asking the right questions.

I AM ROBOTMAN. THIS RP IS A TOOL OF HUMAN OPPRESSION.
Taking the last couple of bites out of his food, Damian finally gets up from the table. "Well," he starts out, "I'm full. Gonna go for a bit of a walk, and then bed. I hope everyone has an enjoyable enough evening." Turning towards the Archmagus, he asks "Er, Archmagus Bailey... do you happen to know of a medium-sized room that isn't in use now? Preferably with a window, if you don't mind."

Re: I AM ROBOTMAN. THIS RP IS A TOOL OF HUMAN OPPRESSION.
Bailey looked up from some sort of elaborate crystalline pastry formation that was growing slowly on the table in front of him.
"Hm? Oh, I don't know. Probably a few, I'd imagine. Where've you been staying up until now? Wherever your room is, it's probably still free."
After the departure of Eve, Lym, James, and Kei, Alya and Joss stood up as well. Joss said, "We haven't slept in a couple of days except for the Descension bit. I think we're going to head out." He and Alya exchanged a look. "We'll be here when you get back tomorrow." They pushed their chairs in, and Alya took their plates up to the Archmagus, taking the opportunity to grab one or two more of the sweets he'd conjured earlier.
"No parfait tonight, madam?" Bailey asked.
"No thank you. Maybe for breakfast?"
Bailey laughed. "Sounds like a plan. I'll be here."
Alya nodded and met Joss at the door. With one last wave to the party still remaining, they left to go find their room for the night.

"Actually I've been taking up residence in one of the student dorms that happened to have a spare room or three. I forget what they called it now. But its a bit... cramped for a short bit of practice." To his mind, now was as good a time to practice as any, and may well be the last time he got to before things got hairy.

With (nearly) everyone heading off for bed, Stephan takes time finishing off his remaining plate of food.
As he lifts the last bit of Chocobo, however, he stops and just stares at it. He turns it between his fingers, appearing in somewhat deep thought.
"...so, we're really doing this tomorrow." he says outloud.

"Oh!" Bailey's eyebrows shot up as he realized what Damian wanted. "Oh, of course. There's space on the grounds to practice just about anything you want. Just go ahead and find someplace, it's what the students do. If there are no students or teachers there, it's free."
Back at the table, Myrnal nodded to Stephan. "Yeah, we are. Or rather, I am and James is and we all know Lyminali is. You going to be okay with it? Seemed like earlier there were... um. Issues."

Myrnal nodded. "That's fair, I guess. I mean, I already gave my opinion on this before. On the one hand, I'd probably rather not mow a path of destruction through a bunch of kids, but on the other... I don't know. They obviously have some free will, as evidenced by Joss and his girlfriend. Hard to say how much. Mental slavery-- I just... I can't in good conscience leave them to live like that. One way or another I'm stopping it."
She tapped her fork absently on the edge of her plate. "Allowing that shit to go on is how good people get killed, and I'm not having it." She made very brief, very pointed eye contact, and didn't elaborate further, instead choosing to shove the remains of her fajita from one side of the plate to the other.

"Seems we agree on that much..." Stephan responds, poking at a remaining piece of Chocobo bone on his plate, "...you know, this whole conversation reminds me of something my father said, the first time I picked up a sword."
He glances down at the scabbard at his side.
"Every time you wield a weapon, you have to make a choice between life and death"
He looks back up at Myrnal, who may notice a slight somber expression on the man's face.
"Free will or not, we'll just have to make the best choice we can. Which, I'm pretty sure we've covered thoroughly by now."

Re: I AM ROBOTMAN. THIS RP IS A TOOL OF HUMAN OPPRESSION.
Myrnal sighed. "This is going to sound incredibly weird, but bear with me, okay? Last time this came up I was working with some people who were, you know. They were okay. You could probably say one of them was a friend of mine, and the others weren't too bad. Except for the one I killed pretty early on, but that has nothing to do with this."
She shook her head, getting back on topic. With some difficulty she continued. "There was this thing where-- This is just between us, you understand. I figure you don't have much reason to go running it all over the place. Due to various issues and dumb things on my part, I attracted the attention of the god of hate. He wanted me to work for him, and I didn't want to, and it was this whole... I don't know. It doesn't matter. I left because I figured they were better off without the hate-beacon in the group or something." Myrnal shrugged and rolled her eyes. "Whatever."
"Next time I saw them I, um... wasn't myself. I-- They realized reasonably quickly that it wasn't me. I was there, but you know how dark gods can be." She forced a laugh. "Don't give them what they want and they usually find a way to get it from you anyway. The others knew. They just... hesitated. My friend specifically told them not to hurt me, and it got him killed, and... you know it doesn't matter if Silvar managed to get it fixed. You know what I mean. It's still not okay."
"I just-- I guess that, um. Yeah. If anything happens and it's a choice between sparing me and letting me do whatever... just kill me. I'd consider it a personal favor. Don't let me do that shit again. It's kind of uncalled for and it does me less good than a lot of people seem to think."

Stephan just sits there a moment, staring back at Myrnal. He figured she had some bad dealings in the past... but this isn't quite what he imagined. Although, it did explain her reaction at the mansion. He'd have probably done the same to a symbol of Nakibe, given his own 'enjoyable' dealings with that God as well.
Still, this does catch him unprepared, and he's not sure what exactly to say. So he simply says the first thing that pops to mind.
"...I don't think I've ever had someone actually ask me to kill them before." he says, still looking somewhat surprised.

Stephan returns the chuckle, though in his mind he's still mulling over her request.
He'd be lying to himself, if he thought Myrnal didn't really mean anything. There were few people, save Midoku and the family, that he tolerated, or even went so far as to call 'a friend'. And Myrnal is pretty damn close to that. Probably because of how similar they were in some ways. He definitely does not like the thought of not seeing her around anymore.
...but at the same time, he understood her request. Far more than she probably realized at the moment. With everything at stake, there might not be any room for hesitation. And a feeling of sympathy could mean the deaths of not just his own family, but everyone else.
"...well, I guess a crazy request deserves a crazy answer." Stephan responds, "If the time comes, and it's a choice between you and the world, I'll choose the world. How's that?"

"Of course! I'm here most of the night, and I'll be in here as soon as I wake up."
Bailey scowled deeply and glared at the intricate and fragile confectionary sculpture he was creating. It had about half a dozen brightly-colored spires of sugar, with delicately-rendered flower petals adorning the base. He put a few finishing touches on his creation and reached over to place a hand over Stephan's dishes. They disappeared into whatever plane of horrible flatware they'd originally come from.

Re: I AM ROBOTMAN. THIS RP IS A TOOL OF HUMAN OPPRESSION.
Stephan blinks a bit in surprise at the dishes vanishing, though he's more captivated by the odd creation before the chef. His logical side tells him to shut up, to just get to bed. If anything, to avoid asking questions he knows he'll regret.
...sadly, his curiousity wins out, and he can't help himself.
"...what exactly is that?" he asks, pointing to the confection in progress.

He almost asked the universe what "the right questions" were. But he thought better of it. There would be time enough tomorrow.
Lym shrugged and went to bed.

Bailey shrugged. "Well, it's an idea a student had that's supposed to go on top of a wedding cake. The only problem is that every time I get started, I keep getting distracted. I mean, look at this." He pushed the whole arrangement toward Stephan a bit. The spires contracted down into loose corkscrews, still pointing up into the air.
"Now honestly. Tell me if you could resist this either." He twirled a finger above the confection and the spires twisted down underneath the mass of flowers and pushed off the table to elevate it about an inch and a half, like little curly stilts.
"Sugar is one of the most obedient foods you can possibly summon with. I mean, watch this! This is so neat! Sit!" The elaborate dessert leaned backward until the back edge touched the table surface. It was 'sitting.'
"Isn't that fantastic?" Bailey asked enthusiastically.

"...uh... yeah..."
That is about all Stephan can manage for a response. He also wonders idly, why so many damn mages tend to have the attention span of a 4 year old after eating 10 sugar cookies. Maybe it's the need for sleep masking his normally irritable nature, but he decides to continue speaking with the man for a moment or two.
"...you could always, you know, just make two of the thing. One for... whatever the bloody hell you're doing now, and one for the other thing." he tells the mage-chef

Bailey shook his head. "No, that wouldn't do. For one thing, having two pieces would be twice as distracting as having one. Then there's the fact that for all I know this is what he wants me to do. Otherwise he'd probably have just bought one pre-made."
He sighed. "Thus is the price of genius laid upon me at last. I have no idea what to do! It's just so neat!" He snapped his fingers and the sculpture stood and hopped twice in place. Bailey sighed again, as if resigned to his irresistable fun.

Re: post
Everyone managed to sleep through the night with no outside disturbances. While Gunnir was a strange choice for a safe haven, there's no doubt that the party was right; even Dawn wouldn't bother them here.
Anyone who wasn't already awake received another wakeup call from Archmagus Lee around seven the next morning.
"Don't know how many of you are up and about, but you all might want to head out pretty soon. ...Oh, and be sure to eat breakfast before you go. Seamus would never let me hear the end of it if the lot of you went out to save the world without a good meal in you. I'll be in my office if you need me, and Seamus can feed you as always. Otherwise, head out whenever you like."
The party is free to meet wherever they like before they leave. Joss and Alya are apparently going to stay at Gunnir until the party returns. Lym knows the location of Dawn's base in the mountains by the Inustani border. Eve can get them there.
Whether everyone is eager to fight or eager to get this over with... it's time to go.

Good morning, Gunnir!
James rolled out of bed groggily, slamming to the floor with an abrupt and noisy thud. The thud may in fact have been the deciding factor as to whether or not James would wake up--the impact was something he arguably might have slept through. Rapidly dressing and checking his weapons, he rushed downstairs, ate a quick Baronian muffin with butter and a bit of bacon, thanked Bailey again for being the most amazing person alive, and quickly ran to assemble himself with the others.

Kei jolted awake as soon as she heard the mental wakeup call; it was quite alarming, to say the least. After calming down she grumbled to herself about pesky psionists, and set to getting herself prepared for the day ahead. And what a long, long day it would be.
---
After grabbing some bread and a small cup of tea, Kei joined the two men who were already waiting. "Good morning, gentlemen," she said, appearing more upbeat than she was earlier. "I trust we will be ready as soon as the others come down."

Moo?
After getting up, Damian took a bit of extra time in the morning getting cleaned up. Partially this was because his training session the previous night had been... less than fruitful in his mind. Slow. Its just too damn SLOW. Eh, don't worry, boss. No one ever said mastering the darkness was easy. ... you COULD have been more help, you know. Who, me? And spoil a perfectly good Kata? Why would I want to do THAT? ...because you did it the LAST three times I tried that one. Details Details, its not like you NEED me to help you out with that one.
He couldn't say it was the most RELAXING shower he'd ever had... then again, he couldn't recall a relaxing shower that wasn't ruined by his shadow at this point. Some days his familiar was JUST like a little kid the way he whined and complained... and others the way he poked fun at everything was just aggravating.
With a sigh, Damian towled off and once again got his gear together, making sure that the gauntlets were placed just so for the easiest draw. Every piece of vital equipment had to be perfect. And, as he walked out of his room and towards breakfast and the meeting, he thought to himself that This Day would go RIGHT, dammit, or he'd MAKE it do so.
When he thought about it, Damian realized that the shower was more enjoyable when he DIDN'T remember what today might bring.

Stephan nods to Kei, continuing to make a few last minute checks to his blade. Then he glances over at Myrnal, giving her a brief nod as well. Seeing that she's busy consuming pastry, he decides to speak to the nekojin for minute.
"You know, I didn't get a chance to mention this the other day, but you handled yourself pretty damn well there the other day, with that spiked bastard." he tells Kei, "Sometimes I forget how fast those blades can be.

Lym sat up straight. He looked at the ceiling.
"Eve," he said, "it's time to go." He put his hand on her shoulder and nudged her gently.
While he waited for her to wake, he attempted to arrange himself for business. He attempted to think optimistic thoughts.
One of the things that had always frightened him about hurting people was how easy it was.
It was very easy.

Re: Moo?
Eve rolled out of bed, not feeling any need to explain her irritation with their new alarm routine. It was as obvious today as it was yesterday.
She pulled her things together without so much as a comment to Lym. It made sense that there would be a few things on her mind this morning, but apparently none of them bore discussion just yet.
When they met the rest of the group, Eve simply raised her hand in silent greeting. Afterward she looked around, making sure they had everyone. Satisfied that the whole group was there, including Damian's ever-present chibi Nakibe, she held out both of her hands so they could all connect for the trip.
Ordinarily, a journey out to Dawn's compound would have taken at least a couple of weeks, depending on the mode of transportation. Only seconds after everyone was connected by the hands, Eve took the party over to a wooded mountainside. There was a small clearing in the trees, out of sight of the compound. The structure itself was set in a small valley between two mountains, but in order to get there the long way, the party would have to make a short hike over the top of the hill.
"I figured this might be a better idea to start with than simply teleporting us up to her front door, though if anyone would like to make another jump rather than go on foot, that's fine with me. I thought I'd give you the option."

Re: Moo?
"If I were Dawn, knowing that my sister is a psionicist that focuses on teleportation, and also knowing that my sister is allied with a group of people that want to kill her for the good of the world, I'd have set up teleportation wards of some sort," noted James. "Besides, that's exactly how she would expect us to show up, so teleporting too close could mean we get caught in a splitting rift or something. I'm not terribly amused at the idea of having every atom in our bodies permanently dissociated because they can't be rejoined at a specific location due to a disfocusing field."
"In other words," concluded James, "I'm perfectly content to walk." His wings buzzed a little, giving the impression of an edgy dragonfly. "We're not really in a hurry at this point, after all, and the teleportation is an effort on Eve anyway. I'd prefer you be able to turn that stamina toward combat when the time comes."

"I've got it," said Lym. He took a seat on his broom, legs hanging off side saddle, and started checking the path ahead with his sense eye as far as he could. He was looking for anything dangerous or suspicious -- though of course he knew better than to think he'd necessarily be able to spot any such thing. More than anything, he was checking the place out to placate the party. He thought the idea that any amount of scouting would prepare them for the infinite weirdness of a determined, talented psion.

Re: post
Lym had little trouble moving along the path up the mountain except for the occasional tree branch threatening to clothesline him off of his broom. The path wasn't well-worn, but it was wide enough for Lym to pass by without trouble.
His sense eye was ranging far ahead of him, which was kind of an odd sensation for Lym. For most people it would be too much of a strain on their short-term memory to navigate so far in advance without smacking into anything, but Lym's pretty practiced with his sense eye and is spared the headache that the effort would cause a novice.
Lym's sense eye passed the crest of the mountain before he got there, and he could see down into the small valley beyond. The clearing between the mountains followed the same theme as Dawn's estate originally had. No surprise there. Nice landscaping seemed to be something Dawn appreciated.
The building itself was contrary to the taste in Evil Wizard Towers shown by Dawn's former master. It was a low, flat building. Any basement floors would have to have been dug down into the mountainsides to the right and left of the structure.
The main entrance to the compound opened directly onto this courtyard, and was the only entrance Lym could see from his current position. He couldn't see anyone outside in the courtyard, nor could he see whether there was anything beyond the building.
There was a broad grassy area taking up what space in the valley was not occupied by Dawn's base. Along the sides and in a couple of small groves were late-flowering trees. There were a couple of hedgerows blocking off separate lawns. The yard was no less carefully tended than Dawn's estate was before the Yuan-ti tore it apart.
(Edit: How about an image to make all this description go down a little easier? It lives here. )

Lym flew back as quickly as he reasonably and safely could.
"Well, nothing looked too bad," he said, shrugging. "And I've got all my toes 'n' fingers. The real problem, of course, is getting into the compound without losing anything important. But I can figure it out when we get there, I susppose."
He motioned over his shoulder and started a second trip to the building. "C'mon, kids. It's not getting any safer."

As Lym and the others make their way up the mountain, they find very little evidence that this area is in use at all, certainly not by a couple dozen pyrokinetic fanatics. Apparently the Acolytes of the Phoenix are being very careful.
Climbing through the trees isn't all that strenuous, but it does take some doing. When they get to the edge of the wooded area, it becomes a little trickier to stay hidden, but it's possible. There are enough small scrub trees and things that no one is striding about entirely in the open. At the very top, the party has to choose between climbing down straight into the courtyard, or making a wider circuit around the compound itself.

"Oh yes, I'm absolutely terrified that sneaking pussies, giant lizards, and death from massive yet stealthy dragons. I mean, I couldn't POSSIBLY be concerned about other shit lurking about around the compound. Or that we could be missing something bloody obvious on the other side. Or that just charging in Dawn's front door is totally fucking daft without checking out the area first. How silly of me to want more tactical information, instead of blindly charging in Dawn's front door, so you can prove to your girlfriend you have a pair of balls."

Re: Not now... but SOON!
Myrnal covered her mouth with the back of her hand, but managed not to laugh audibly. If there's one thing a ninja should be good at, it's staying silent, but still. It was a close call.
Eve rolled her eyes at the conversation and flicked her cigarette, skillfully launching her discarded ash perilously close to Stephan. "Let's all be nice, now."
As Lym inspected around the far edge of the compound, he saw directly behind the building a short stretch of manicured lawn. A dirt path led back between two hillsides. This would be on the far corner. Following the path with his sense eye, Lym found a crevasse that seems to be filled with greenery. This was probably a new addition to the landscape, as it was also surrounded by a stone wall to prevent entrance by anyone climbing down the mountainsides. Apparently Dawn's love of landscaping extends into some kind of walled backyard arboretum.
Beyond that, there aren't any entrances around the back. Looking closer at the front entrance, Lym can see that it's a massive set of double doors. The door on the left is dark stone, and the one on the right is nearly white. There are no handles, and little ornamentation except for the flowering vines and a small dish-shaped oil lamp next to the door.

But I'm going in. Screw what the rest of you have to say about the situation. This is for the future, and the front door is just as safe as the back door when we're talking about the invasion of the compound of some evil psion."
James ran his fingers through his hair and strode toward Dawn's "front door," half expecting to be sliced in half by some unseen foe before he could blink. If nothing else, it was action, and the rest of the party seemed perfectly content to sit on their asses and discuss the prospect of scaly ninja.

Re: post
As the party members make their way down the mountainside, no dragons, or ninja dragons rise up out of nowhere to kill them. Though there is a ninja in the party, she seems relatively uninterested in slaughtering anyone present. Her concerns seem to lie mainly with the fact that they're walking across open space in the middle of the day, which is not usually the best foundation for a good healthy attempt at stealth. Myrnal will deal, however.
They aren't bothered by anything or anyone while crossing the front lawn. Maybe it isn't riddled with traps because a bunch of kids hang out there on a regular basis. It's really unproductive to kill your own allies before they get a chance to burn anything down or be sacrificed to Reshtaha.
There seem to be some birds in the trees around the compound and nesting in a few of the hedgerows. The sun is shining and there's really no wind down here in the valley. A few of the flowering bushes have some big fuzzy bees flying around them, and Kei hears passing overhead the same sort of bird-like buzzing-whirring sound she heard on the way to Dawn's former estate.
The front door doesn't look any different up close. Two stone doors with no handles, the left one one of dark stone, and the right of lighter color. Next to the doors is a small oil lamp, and now that they're closer they can see that it is filled and presumably usable.

James couldn't hear anyone on the other side, but without door handles it would be difficult to get in under most circumstances. The doors seem to open outward, which would negate the possibility of simply shoving them open.

There weren't any handles on the inside of the doors either, but it was probably possible for James to push on one of the doors magically and open it outward. That certainly seemed to be a sensible enough plan.

James managed to push the lighter-colored door open from the inside, and if door choice mattered, he picked the right one. Nothing horrendous happened, or at least nothing James could discern.
Inside, the building was nearly dark, so the main light source was sunlight coming in the door. There was a hallway directly in front of the door with a set of double door at the end and two doorways on the left wall. By peeking his head in a little, James could see a dark hallway extending to the right from the doors.
Important features of the interior:
While the entrance doors had been black on the left and white on the right, the interior walls were just the opposite. In the hallway straight in front of the door, the wall on the left was white, and on the right was a black wall. The floor in the straight hallway was covered in black and white tiles. Dawn, ever the traditionalist, had apparently been unable to resist including an old staple of the Traditional Villain Headquarters.
The hallway to the right deviated from this somewhat. The floor wasn't tiled the same way, but was rather flat black. The right hallway had a white wall on the left and a black wall on the right. At the end of the right hallway, past the black floor, was another set of double doors.
(For the record, I will be posting a drawing of this, as I know it's kind of obnoxious and do not expect people to keep track of it without a visual reference. After all, the whole point is that your characters can see all this with relative ease. You should, too.)

"...nice decorating." Stephan comments, giving the inside a quick look when he's able to, "And, I don't think 'white is safe' is going to cut it for this."

Evil Villain Decorating Co. - For the perfect evil lair.
"I think she hired a new decorator JUST for us." Grumbled Damian. Clearly things just refused to be easy today.

Kei and Damian remember something that Joss had mentioned the previous night.
"In the areas that are safe for the kids, the rules are really simple so that even the littler ones can remember. If you see a white wall, that's where you have to be. Nothing else matters, so if you see other stuff that says otherwise, I think it's usually just there to distract you."
No matter what the party decides to do, they have to do something. They've gotten some pretty strong hints as to how this can be handled, but it remains to be seen how reliable those tips were. It also remains to be seen just how to apply that advice.

... this isn't good, but... we can't just sit here... Yes you can. You could sit here, I could play charades. We could bake cookies... somehow. ... How about a BETTER plan? Oh, so you want a PLAN? ...nevermind.
Damian stepped forwards along the white wall.

Kei followed Damien's lead, sticking to the white walls as much as possible. "Avoid the other colors," she said quietly, as she walked forward. "From what Joss said, anything else would only hinder us."

Considering the only other option involved standing around outside in broad daylight, Stephan follows in behind the nekojin, sticking to the side with the white wall.

Re: Evil Villain Decorating Co. - For the perfect evil lair.
Staying on the tiles adjacent to the white wall, Damian, as their leader, takes a step onto a white tile, and nothing happens. The black tile just beyond it seems relatively harmless as well.
It's not very hard to stay adjacent to the wall at this point. After all, the trap is obviously intended to be navigable by children who may or may not be trustworthy when it comes to elaborate traps, mysterious riddles or trick passages guarded by horrible monsters of every unsettling variety. They are children after all. The simpler the rules, the better. That in mind, Damian might want to warn his shadow not to venture too far from the wall either.
As the party files in the door along the white wall, Eve comes in behind the others with Myrnal trailing behind last. Damian seems to be leading the others along a relatively safe path to the first door. It's white on the right, and black on the left like the entrance door was.

"So far, so good," said Lym nervously.
He silently attempted to look past the next door with his sense eye.

Re: post
Lym could see beyond the door a good-sized classroom. It had several cabinets and shelves and things, and there was a door on the right wall that presumably led to the next room over.
He couldn't see anybody in there except for one person ear the opposite wall. His back was to the door, and in fact he had his arms over his face in one corner of the room in classic "hide and seek" fashion. Despite the fact that his face was hidden, Lym could see that he was wearing horrifically colorful clothing that, in terms of most rules of fashion, made no damn sense at all. He was less than three feet tall, and had what looked like black wasp wings that twitched occasionally in irritation.
"T'ain't fair, ye know. Poor ol'Danny. Telepathin' me so I canna tell where ye are," the figure said in a voice that, in another world, might sound thickly Irish. He turned around and Lym could see that this wasn't a child, but a very small grown man.
He put one hand on his hip and addressed the seemingly empty room. "Now then why would ye say that? Bad enough that I'm always it." There was a giggle from one of the closets and the little man jumped right up off the floor, crying out in surprise. "Och, I found ye! Ye're it now and I'm hidin' next time!"

Lym motioned for silence and whispered to the group. "The li'l pixie bastard is in there playing hide 'n' seek. We can catch him by surprise. This is our chance. My instinct says we open the door and hit him immediately."

"Are there any children still in there?" she whispered. "If they manage to alert the others, this could all come falling down on us?"
Something about this didn't feel right, and a feeling of apprehension nipped away at the back of Kei's mind. It took a while to identify the cause, until the remembered; the buzzing sound. The same sound she heard outside was heard just outside of Dawn's estate the first time they visited her.
But that still didn't answer one vital question: what did it mean?

...Godsdammit... The sword knight thinks to himself, peering around Kei's head to look at Lym.
"Exactly what she said," Stephan whispers over the nekojin's shoulder, "The moment that kid hiding in there hears us, they're gonna scream and probably do that 'pathing shit to everyone here. We should at least *try* to get by the room unnoticed. Even if we're found out, we would've been spotted charging in there anyway."

Re: post
The talking behind the door ceased as Danny stopped ranting about the injustice visited upon him whenever the children wanted to play hide and seek. There was a moment or two of silence, and then the white door opened, revealing what Lym had already seen of the pixie.
As the door swung wide, the little man grinned. "I canna imagine ye've come for anythin' but a fight. I'll tell ye this. These ones aren't ready for ye. If you're set on fightin' someone 'alf your size..." He grinned and the wasp-like wings on his back buzzed as he lifted himself to roughly eye level. "Maybe you should be after startin' with me."
Danny disappeared, and the buzzing noise stopped abruptly. It was impossible to tell where he was at this point, but Stephan does remember immediately that he keeps cold iron weapons around for a reason. Fey, like Danny, do not like cold iron.

"...well, so much for being stealthy." Stephan says aloud, trying to get his cold iron longsword as quickly as possible.
