Kei nodded in response. While she would have prefered to be left alone at the moment, Myrnal's logic was perfectly undertandable.

"If that is what you wish," she replied. "But only until the evening."

"Yeah. I'll keep a safe distance then. I'm sure she knows enough about me that she would not be inclined to want me hanging around."

Myrnal rubbed the back of her neck as she looked away thoughtfully. "She can't possibly like me very much. Her master once turned me into a dog. If he'd done it to anyone else I would have laughed, but at the time it really pissed me off." She chuckled, shaking her head. "He called me a bitch and turned me into a lapdog."

"Oh, months ago. I'd imagine it's hardly the worst thing Elaith did. To tell the truth, it wasn't him I had a problem with. Not a personal problem at least." Her expression darkened. "His apprentice kind of pissed me off, but I probably evened out that score pretty damn well."

Myrnal shook it off. "Anyway, it was a little while ago. I'm not sore about it at this point, though I did develop a habit of scratching myself like this for a while." Myrnal pulled a hand up behind her ear and scratched vigorously in a very canine manner. "That was annoying, but it stopped eventually."

"Um, the meeting where we're theoretically going to jump her is scheduled for tonight...so theoretically I suppose that's when we'd do it, right?"

Lym was getting irritable. This bunch of incohate drunks was what he had to work with? And where the fuck was Eve?

Myrnal took a slow, deep breath and released it with an obvious effort at unclenching her jaw.

"That's..." She took another breath, staying calm but forcing herself to do so. "It doesn't bother me as much now as it did then. If you think this is pissed, you should have seen me before. Sakhiel, uh... sent us a letter informing us that he'd killed a good friend of mine. Offered to ship his remains to us in a thimble." She ran a hand through her curly hair, yanking it roughly out of her face. "Shouldn't bother me at this point. It wasn't true. Still pissed me off though. Even when the guy came back and was obviously okay, it just... I don't know. Once you go over the edge, you're already there, you know?"

The bartender of the Ivory Horn didn't encourage public intoxication, but he kept an eye on everyone's glasses, ready to refill them if necessary. Fortunately, no one was requesting more alcohol, so he could continue to placidly wipe down the assorted glasses and other liquor receptacles behind the bar.

It had been half an hour since Eve left to smoke and, apparently, go shopping.

Lym sighed, exasperated. "I shouldn't, but, I have to...she should know better than to make me worry like this..."

He walked into a corner without saying another word and used Remote Viewing in an attempt to check up on her.

Re: metasubject
As Lym felt his power manifest and connect to his desired target, something felt wrong. In a rather painful way. In fact, he now knew why Yadali wanted a healer present while scrying on Dawn. A jolt of electricity ran through him momentarily, but he managed to hold his concentration enough to keep the manifested power up and running. (Lym takes 14 electricity damage.)

He saw two women conversing outside of town. They were both, to Lym's dismay, very familiar. The Valerians were having a rather hushed conversation, which Lym seems to have missed much of. Eve also did seem to have been shopping. She's dressed more conservatively now, rather than in the cave-crawling clothes she had on before. She's changed into black slacks, a white long-sleeve shirt and a black vest.

Dawn was dressed, if possible, more nicely. She had on her standard black dress, but over it is an indigo sleeveless overcoat with sapphire earrings to match. Her green hair hung down below her waist in thick waves.

Eve is the first one Lym heard speak. "What are you going to do?"
"I don't have to tell you that, Eva."
"You have something planned. I know you. You wouldn't risk yourself unless you knew it would be worth it."
"That's true," Dawn replied. "That much hasn't changed."
"So why won't you tell me?"
"Because your loyalties are uncertain. You will tell your new friends and they will not come."
"Dawn. I don't know what you're doing, but you're my sister. We've been friends since we were old enough to walk. I don't want anything to happen to you, but I won't let you hurt them."
"Let me?" Dawn smiled, her lips parting slightly. "You have no right to dictate my actions. I'm barely older than you are, true. But I am older. And this is too important."
"Are you going to kill them?" Eve asked softly.
"Them? Are you this worried for all of them? But for the record, no. I don't plan to kill them today. That would be a waste." Dawn paused for a few long moments. "No, you don't, do you?" Eve looked away. "This is the deal I'm offering. I will not destroy what you've been thinking about since you woke up this morning. And... if you're right about him, neither will they. Then you will know, Eva. It's what you want." As Dawn spoke the last sentence, her voice took on a strange resonance as though two voices instead of one were speaking.
Eve paused, head tilted as if listening to some distant noise. "You give me your word you'll follow through on this?"
"I do. This will be our little experiment."
Eve stood, leaning on her broom slightly. "I have to go. I... I can't stay here all day. Lym's going to worry about me."
"He will. In fact, it's probably Lyminali Eddress watching us right now."
Eve's eyes widened. She whipped her broom around underneath her and flew back to the city. Dawn laughed, the sound glacial and pure in the warm early afternoon.

onoes!!
Lym clutched his chest tightly, stinging from the electricity damage. He tried not to make a sound, but it hurt like hell and even after it ended his nerves ached. His heart beat too fast and burned and his breaths were sharp, painful.

After collecting himself a little, he said to Kerov and Stephan, "I've just remembered there's something I need to do. Something I forgot to buy. I'll be back in a bit. You two lovely lushes keep an eye on each other."

Without waiting for a response, he left. He waited outside the bar, scanning the skies for Eve.

Two thoughts were running through his head.

One: Oh shit oh fuck oh damn oh shit oh fuck oh hell, shit, fuck.

Two: She likes me!!

After a few minutes, he saw a familiar shape fly overhead. It dipped down into an alleyway nearby, and out of it came Eve. When she saw Lym, she tucked her broom under one arm to free both of her hands. Pulling out and lighting a cigar, she clenched it between her teeth and crossed her arms, obviously waiting for him to come to her. When he didn't immediately approach, she simply raised her eyebrows expectantly and didn't move an inch.

Lym smiled and then frowned at her. He approached her with an appraising eye. He looked at her hair, her forehead, her eyebrows, her eyes. Her nose, her lips. Her neck. Her chest, her belly, her hips, her knees, her ankles, her toes. He considered her carefully and seriously as if he were seeing her for the first time.

He looked at her face again. Not her eyes, in particular, just her face, generally.

"I like the outfit," he said, blankly.

She lifted the cigar from her mouth in a very businesslike manner that was immediately dispelled by the cloud of smoke she blew in Lym's direction.

"Thanks. It's new." Eve flicked ash from her cigar onto the sidewalk. "So. Was it you? You know what I mean. Are you watching me now?"

"You worried me. I'm sorry. But you're safe now, right? And we won't say anything to anybody in there," he jerked his thumb over his shoulder, "about what I saw. No reason."

He stepped a little closer to her, experimentally. He could smell her cigar. He could feel the warmth coming out of the lit end.

"Enough."

Lym tilted his head sideways and smiled at her a little. Just the tiniest bit. Then he leaned in and wrapped his arms gently around her.

He spoke quietly, almost directly into her ear. "As far as what you said to Dawn...I don't think it really changes anything. I always assumed she had a plan. We just have to hope ours is better. Or that it all works out somehow. Or something."

Eve relaxed tangibly... to the point where she dropped her cigar on the ground. She stared down at it and shook her head briefly as if to clear it.

Eve closed her eyes and held back laughter. She chuckled a little, but was soon outright laughing. She looked back to Lym with a poorly-concealed smile on her face. "Yeah.... I knew what you meant. So..." The smile disappeared and she was serious again. "Yeah."

Eve looked at her cigar, still glowing faintly from the ground below. She bent to pick it up, getting it going again before she stood. "I'm sorry I lied about where I was going. I thought you'd try to stop me, and I had some things to take care of. You're really not going to tell anyone?"

A pause.

Eve narrowed her eyes in mild anger. "Sounded like that, did it? Huh. Nice." She took a long drag on her cigar. "She's being careful. She shouldn't have needed to suggest that. It's not like her. It's cheating."

Eve gave a rueful little smile. "She doesn't use her powers unless it's important. I guess she's as interested as she said she was." She looked at Lym out of the corner of her eye. "Let's just say that right now there's one thing standing between Dawn and the rest of you. But it works both ways. I'm the line she has to cross to get to you, and vice versa." Her expression turned to one of warning, and she gestured with her cigar hand for emphasis. "I've bought time. That's all. Eventually she'll be beyond this kind of thing, but for now it's a kind of sport for her."

She shook her head. "I've seen her like this before. Right before her family died. It's why I left and I see it again now. She seems... driven in a way that doesn't tend to be a good sign. I just don't know what she's up to."

"Lym, it's not that I'm excited about it. I know how she gets. I know she's not going to stop. It's just... since this whole mess got started all I've been able to think about is where I belong. If I have to choose between my sister and-- and you, I needed to know where I stood and so does she. Not just where I stood, but where all of you stand. The things she told me... I don't want to be used, not by either side."

She sighed and puffed her cigar thoughtfully. "But that's what's going to happen, no matter where I end up. It doesn't matter what you say and I don't care about what that teetotaling bitch says. Let me tell you what bothers me."

She ground her cigar out on the bottom of her shoe. "You all act so concerned for my well-being and take care of me like I'm a child, telling me nice things about figuring out what's going on before we do anything and then in the next breath you're planning to go off and get yourself killed trying to murder my sister. What do you want, besides seeing her dead? Have you thought about the kids? You throw that out there like it's the reason you're so pissed, but have you given a moment's thought to what will happen to them?" She tilted her head and looked at him. She didn't seem angry, just curious and a little disappointed.

"I know what it's like not to be able to rely on anyone but her, pathetic as it is," she continued. "I know what it's like to have no one but Dawn care about what happens to you. If one of those kids she's got were me instead of a bunch of brats you've never met, would you be so quick to go in with nothing but killing on your mind?"

Re: onoes!!
"Eve, that's the kind of hypothetical situation that's absurd on its face. If it were you, it wouldn't be you -- it would be someone else entirely. Now, if you weren't you, but instead a little girl who had been raised and trained to kill -- which is, of course, a prerequisite for your being in her little cult -- yes, I would still be going in there hoping to kill. That's the situation we're in, Eve.

It's like killing in self defense, or getting rid of a baby after a rape. You aren't morally culpable because someone else made it necessary. Someone tries to stab you, they take the guilt when you fight back and maybe kill them. Someone rapes you, they take the guilt when you have to get rid of their kid.

It's the same thing here. Dawn made little killing machines. She perverted children. She ruined them. It's not my fault that they, and she, have to be stopped. It's hers. It's not that I like violence. For goodness sake, girl, look what I've spent my life learning to do! I have some nasty powers, but you know what most of of my abilities are for? Learning. About the world, about things outside the world. If I enjoyed killing, I would have specialized very differently. I would have learned to use an actual weapon, rather than this fucking crossbow. You know what I spent all my money on? Armor. Protection. Stuff to keep me safe. Potions to heal. That's where my money went. That's where my priorities lie.

So I'm not bloodthirsty, dear. I'm responding to something that I see as a blight on this world in a way that is morally encumbent on me, due to a situation somebody else created.

I never pretended my mind wasn't made up. One way or another this shit with the kids stops as long as I'm alive. The question is whether or not people die. That's the question.

So yes, it must feel awful to be those kids. But I believe in morality, and I believe living to commit horrible sins is worse for a person than dying with relatively clean hands. That's what I think. I think if you were one of those kids, and I killed her, and I killed you, I would be saving you the hell of waking up fifty years from now and knowing that you had burned hundreds of people. That you had assisted Dawn's mysterious master in ruining maybe entire cities. That's what I'm thinking right now."

Eve's face hardened and she nodded. "I'm glad you're so ready to decide what's best for a bunch of people you've never met. I'm glad you're so willing to put them out of their misery because they're on the opposite side. It's touching that you've got everyone's best interests at heart. I just hope you don't lose that conviction, or you'll be waking up fifty years from now with doubts."

She walked past him toward the Ivory Horn, careful not to touch him as she passed. She turned at the doorway. "Do what you feel you have to do. It's not my place to judge you. It's none of my business."

With that, she opened the door and walked inside, sitting down at a table in the corner without a word.

Kei was silent for a good bit, before she bothered to respond.

Once you go over the edge, you're already there, you know?

After all, wasn't this the reason why she left her home in the first place? Wasn't she pushed over the edge herself?

She shook herself mentally, before she could get too far into reminiscing. Kei turned towards her new companion, and said, "I think I understand. And...there is no shame in being upset. It is an honorable thing, to care so much about one's friends."

Something was up.

He didn't know what exactly, the pounding in his head not helping much. But he knew something out of sorts was going on.

"Hey, Kerov... you get the feelin' something's wrong with Lym there?" he asks the angel-man. In his current state, he wanted to make sure it wasn't the alcohol talking.

Lym growled in frustration, shook his fist at the sky, facepalmed, and finally walked back into the Ivory Horn.

"Hey, guys, I'm back," he said to the drunks, without pausing in the slightest to wait for a response. He sat down at the table accross from Eve.

"Alright, then," he whispered fiercely. "If you don't like my way, then, keeping in mind that what you want may not be what you want," and he softened here, suddenly, as if putting on the brakes: "What do you want me to do?"

Myrnal appeared to chafe slightly at that statement. "You know, a couple of months ago I would've denied even being worried about him. But... thanks. It doesn't excuse the rest of what happened, but you get the idea." She paused a moment. "What were we talking about? Ah. Elaith. So, basically, he was a weird man. Weird in the unpleasant way. Figures he and Dawn would get along."

Eve didn't look placated in the least by Lym's question. "I just want you to give them a chance. I hate it when she's right. She said you would do whatever you had to, say whatever you had to if it would get you one step closer to killing her. No matter what was in your way... kids, me, whatever." She looked him dead in the eye. "Because Lym... if your only criteria for killing someone is that they're a little too close to Dawn, maybe we should forget everything you've said and take this outside."

"Sure, fine," he shrugged. He smiled a little. "I'll give them a chance. I'm curious, though -- what am I giving them a chance to do? What do they have to do wrong for you to consider it acceptable for me to help put 'em out of their misery? I'm just not sure where the line is, if they haven't crossed it. I'm not sure what we're waiting for them to do, when we say we'll give them a chance."

Eve sighed slightly. "To see how much free will they've really got. If what I saw of them is any indication, they're no worse off than I was at their age. "The line I'm drawing between them and you, dear, is that you're not hurting people at her command. I respect you. I think rather highly of you, actually -- becoming such an independent person, coming from that kind of background..."

He looked at her sideways, affectionately. "You didn't accept what she gave you. You've grown past it. There's another line. Of course, they haven't had the chance...but as long as they don't try to kill me, or you, I'll try to give them that chance...still. It's a distinction. Do you want a few more? We've got an afternoon to kill.

You hold liquor a lot better than I bet they do, for one," he said, chuckling.

Ah, it's one of those situations, Kei thought to herself, with a mental chuckle. However, the relation between the two was unimportant at the moment.

"I have heard a bit about him myself," she said. "That he was an especially vile sort of necromancer."

Myrnal laughed. "Yeah, the necrophiliac kind. He liked his dead people in a way that's probably best not to think about."

Eve nodded slowly. "Okay. It's just... she told me that you'd tell me anything you had to just to get to her. I'm sick and fucking tired of being lied to." She looked down at the table for a while. "I don't need a drink. But I'm going to have one."

Eve walked to the bartender and got herself a glass of ale. She sat back down in front of Lym. "A toast. To my sister who doesn't drink. May she always disapprove mightily of my habits and my choice of men." She grinned and downed half of it in one long swig.

"Here-here!" he said, miming as if to clink a mug against hers. "I'd join you, but I've already definitely had my capacity for the morning..."

He looked at the table for a while, perhaps a little sadly, then looked up at her and sighed. He smiled. "I won't tell you I never lie, because sometimes I do. But I'll try not to lie to you, alright? You can keep me honest. And I can keep you...well, um, is there a particular adjective you'd like to be kept?"

Eve smiled softly. "I don't need to be kept anything. Just kept." She sipped her drink more slowly this time. "Don't lose track of me, and I won't lose track of you. How's that for a start?"

Kei made a disgusted face, and said, "That is disgusting! I would not expect a necromancer to respect the dead, but that...ugh."

Granted, it wasn't the most harmful thing he's done with his abominations, but it certainly wasn't what Kei was expecting.

Myrnal laughed harder. "Yeah. He's a real gem. How could any woman resist a man that would be just as happy with her dead?" She shook her head. "It's pretty obvious to me why his lady of choice wanted nothing to do with him. The idea of someone screwing my dead body hardly gets me in the mood." She glanced over at Kei. "You really didn't know? I thought that was common knowledge or something by now. It was certainly one of the first things Hakaril told us about him."

Eve nodded, staring into her glass. "We wait."

Myrnal waved a hand dismissively. "Eh. A while ago. Most of the really heavy stuff happened on Ka'thalar, which is a good distance from here. I only know what happened up to a certain point, so there could have easily been more. That's just what I was there for."

If Kei were in a hurry she could make it to the city gates in fifteen minutes. If she took her time and window-shopped it might take her half an hour at most.

"Yeah. That's what I hear. He'd have to be, seeing as we're not all dead or something at least approximating dead. I never found out what really happened after I left, but it's safe to assume that it's been taken care of. Other than one little green-haired loose end, of course."

Myrnal thought a moment. "I don't know Hyral at all. I know who he is, but I don't think I'll consider us introduced until he's sober for the day. Kerov is the one who found me, though I don't know much about him either. He seems like a pretty straightforward guy, though."

With no input forthcoming from Kerov, Stephan sighs and turns to face Eve and Lym. He massages his forehead a bit, hoping the pulsing throbbing will die down soon as he observes the pair talking.

He didn't like it one bit, the two of them talking alone. Based on past experience, it was never a good sign when your cohorts talked to themselves in a corner. It meant information vital to the mission you weren't privy to. Information they 'think' is best not shared, but generally should have been when the time comes.

But the secrecy was not the only thing bothering him. Stephan found himself unable to completely trust Eve, even after the little 'intervention' earlier. Despite whatever she claimed, he knew Dawn was still family to her. That could be a serious liability when the time comes.

...Assuming, of course, she's telling the truth. She could also be pulling a fast one, and using the little psychic guy's feelings against all of them. But whatever the case was, it could wait for future investigation. Stephan had other pressing matters at the moment.

Namely the feeling of a metal spike being driven into his forehead. He sighs to himself and thuds his forehead lightly into the table, hoping the dull pain will mask the pulsing one in his head.

Re: Woo for anti-social characters!
The door to the Ivory Horn slammed open with a sudden bang. In the doorway stood a determined elf girl in a green tunic and pants with her grey hair standing on end like dandelion fluff. She was followed by a fox and strode confidently into the room. In a word--Yadali.

She went directly to Kerov and poked him repeatedly in the arm until he looked up at her, irritated and a little bewildered.
"Kerov! I have an idea! I know how we can get your tavern back." She slapped her hand down onto the bar and beneath it was a note. "This is from General Hakaril to my people. If we send an emissary from Doma to talk to them, I bet we can get them to send over enough people to rebuild the Jade Dragon!"

Kerov scanned over the letter a couple of times.

"Dear Hare and Namil Bensha, Tuathan Head Druids,

Once again, the fair kingdom of Doma calls out to you in hopes of obtaining your most needed aid. Some months prior, you assisted me and my people in the fight against one of the greatest and most foul threats to the safety of all life on Gaera--the fight against Elaith Thenswick and his numerous subordinates. Without your aid and knowledge of the local terrain, I fear that my troops would most certainly have been outmatched, and I was also proud to fight alongside your daughter, Yadali, whose abilities impress me in a way that I find difficult to express verbally. There has already been discussion of a friendship between both our peoples, and while I recognize that you have your own agendas to be concerned with, I would like to draw your attention to a somewhat undesireable situation that I wish to avert--the rise of Dawn, one of Elaith's prior followers. As we speak, she is gathering an army, a cult of children possessing immense psionic talent. I know not what her precise aims may be, but I am well-aware that she must be stopped at any cost, lest she bring ruin to the entire Igalan continent.

However, this time, I call upon you and your people not as warriors, but as builders. Dawn's followers have swept across the landscape committing acts of arson, displacing many Doman settlers from their homes and killing even more. One of the unfortunate casualties of this little skirmish thus far has been a primary place of gathering and discussion--the Jade Dragon Inn. While at first this may seem a minor and trivial issue, I feel that the destruction of the Inn is an assault on the Doman way of life. The Jade Dragon is known not only as a place for fine food and drink but as a local nexus of trade, a haven of intellectual discussion, and a crossroads for weary adventurers who otherwise might not have the dedication to continue their worthy quests.

I understand that the Druidic people of your lands are skilled artisans and builders, capable of shaping earth and stone to create (and recreate) marvels that no Doman craftsman could ever hope to match with mere tools. As a token of our friendship, I humbly request that you and your people assist us in the rebuilding of the destroyed homes--and primarily in the reconstruction of the Inn. Not only would such an excursion give some of the Tuathan craftsmen a means by which to visit Doma, working in concert to rebuild such a center of communal life would strengthen our diplomatic bonds in ways that no simple peace talk or friendly letter can. If you and your people are willing to aid us, we would be forever in your debt. As an added bonus, once the Inn is rebuilt, I would be forced to invite you to discuss the future of our friendship over as many glasses of your preferred beverage as desired."

The letter is signed with a faintly glowing arcane sigil and Hakaril's name in very fancy calligraphy with an artistic flourish--the S in his surname appears to be topped with a red hat in the style of his own.

Kerov barely had time to absorb the information when Yadali began talking again. "You see, we think that if you and I go through the castle gate to Ka'thalar and arrange for Chandler to meet us there in time to ride back on his airship we'd only be gone a couple of days. Long enough for the trip back, since we obviously can't teleport everywhere we go. But General Hakaril and I talked about it! This should work!" She paused for air and to think for a moment. "Besides. It's better than sitting around doing nothing all day, right? Look. You go ahead to the castle, I'll make sure everyone here is good to go for all their stuff. I'll take care of everything. You go ahead, and we'll get your inn rebuilt."

Rather than sit at the bar and enjoy his hangover, Kerov chose to do something productive and help fix what Dawn had burned and destroyed. He headed out the door toward the castle and, eventually... Ka'thalar.

Stephan blinked.

Then blinked again.

Then blinked a few more times.

He must have been more sloshed than he realized. He didn't just see and hear what he thought he did, right? No one with an ounce of brains would have done what he thought just happened. No one with any amount of common sense would intentionally weaken their group, by sending a member off on a menial task unimportant in comparison to the current problems at hand.

"...would you mind explaining..." he somewhat growled at Yadali, "...why the BLOODY FUCK YOU JUST SENT HIM OFF?!"

Yadali turned slowly to face Stephan, not pleased with his tone. Alex began backing away from her and sat a few feet away.

"Because... Stephan...." She paused and after a few moments she had changed appearance drastically. Stephan found himself staring back at his own angry scowl and subject to his own menacing tone. "He is bringing back a bunch of Druids. If you want someone else to replace him because you're scared of the teenage girl and her army of children, I'll hire someone else like I hired you. If not..."

She became Yadali again. "Think of it as going for reinforcements. If you're really that worried about strength of numbers, you should be glad that someone thought to import a bunch of people to help out that not only can fight, but have fought her and her master before."

Eve looked over at Lym and shrugged. "If it's important to him, let him go. I personally don't think one person would have been the difference between winning and losing anyway. If we're going to have a strategic advantage against Dawn, numbers just isn't going to be it. She already outnumbers us ten to one if you count the kids. Making the gap more pronounced is bad, but the numbers battle was never ours to win from the start."

Stephan just sat there, still looking unhappy with the young-looking druid.

"Considering all you mentioned aloud was 'sending over enough people to rebuild the Jade Dragon', how the fuck was I supposed to know you meant more tree h... people to help us, too?."

He was tempted to dispute her point about 'numbers not making a difference'. Were it just, say, Kai alone to fight this woman, he was damn sure her chances of success would be astronomically low. So to him, losing Kerov was a significant blow to their chances. They had less people to carryout tasks, less skills to utilize for their plans, and less capability to cope with unexpected situations.

However, if she was speaking the truth about more druids coming, he decided to drop it. Much as he disagreed with them (how anyone could put plant life above a living, breathing human being was beyond him), he had to admit some of them could be rather formidable.

He just hoped they weren't all as... 'special', as their current employer.

Yadali sighed. "When they get here, they'll probably be able to spare people to help us out. Well. Help me out. I don't think they give a damn about you. No offense. But if you want combat-type help, I'll see if I can get my parents to come over themselves. Dad will definitely come, and my mother will if I ask her right."

Myrnal looked to Kei curiously. "What do you mean 'in his way?' I didn't get much chance to talk to him. He seemed a little out of it at the time, actually."

Yadali shrugged in response to Stephan's question. "Well, I know you guys'll need those scrolls, so I'll have them sent your way. Other than that, if there's nothing else you need, Kerov and I will probably head out as soon as we can so we can... you know. Get back sooner."

Eve looked to Lym and then at Stephan. "I guess all we can do is wait here. Kei's got some form of backup, and if anything goes wrong she's got us, too."

She bit her lower lip thoughtfully. "I don't... I don't know how long Dawn's going to care about things like promises she's made. For now she probably won't go back on her word. We won't be able to count on that for long, I think. Dawn's changed since I last saw her. From what I can tell, some of it has to do with her death and events-" She gestured broadly in the air as she spoke. "-surrounding all that. I think your friend should be all right for now." She looked over at Lym again. "Just keep an eye on them in case I'm wrong."

Myrnal nodded. "Yeah. It happens. We'll see how he does when he's had time to clear his head. Anyway, I'm going to slip off for a bit, but I'll be in the general vicinity if you need anything." Myrnal ducked down a side street with a short wave to Kei. Once she turned the corner, she literally vanished from sight in the shadowed alley.

Yadali ruffled her hair with one hand. "Yeah, sure." She strode over to Lym and placed a hand on his shoulder. A wave of cool energy passed over him like a breath of wind, relieving any lingering pain from the electricity. When she's finished, Yadali slaps Lym on the shoulder and steps back.

(Lym recovers 16HP, putting him up to full HP.)

"There you go. Anyway," Yadali continued. "I'll have the scrolls sent to Myrnal. If she thinks she can use them, she can go ahead and do whatever. You guys seem fine here. I'm going to head out with Kerov. We'll be back in a couple of days. Don't get yourselves killed or anything. Resurrecting people's expensive." She snapped her fingers and Alex slipped over to her side. The two of them walked out the door on their way back to Yadali's homeland.

The next few hours passed pretty uneventfully for everyone. Those left behind waited nearby for the time when they'd be needed, and Kei waited for her appointment with Dawn. When the time came, there was really only one place for her to go... the city gates.

Is this really the right thing? What if I just end up making things worse?

Or what if this is just a trap...

She shook her head, and went back to watching. After all, this was hardly the first time she had thought this; she had been mulling over ever since she agreed to the meeting.

There's no turning back now she thought to herself. All I can do is talk with her.

As Kei sat by the gates, in the distance something blinked onto the horizon. It was a human figure, and it made its way closer until it was clearly a young woman in blue.

Dawn approached Kei, and with the sun shining on her green hair and flickering in her sapphire earrings, she almost seemed like a normal young woman. But the eyes in that delicate face had an icy glint that contrasted sharply with the polite expression and courteous nod she sent Kei's way.

"Hello," she said quietly. "I am glad you decided to come."

Dawn gave a slow nod, as though this question were a wise one. "My students require training. There is little opportunity at this time for the study of psionics. Such talented children should be allowed to reach their potential. They are progressing much faster than I did when I was younger, mostly because they have a teacher to answer their questions. Psionics is a dangerous discipline for trial and error."

Dawn tipped her head curiously. "Their exercises? I assure you that as powerful as a few of these children are, they must learn to control their powers. Joss is a fine example. You remember him... you assisted him in the matter of the giants. Those burnscars on his arm and hand come from a training accident that would not have happened under my supervision."

Dawn paused and pursed her lips briefly before speaking. "One of the reasons I suggested this discussion is that I will not have you or your friends attacking any of us out of some misguided concern for the welfare of my children. If you knew what they left behind for a chance at something greater... you might be less inclined to question my guardianship of my students."

And Dawn responds that they need to be doing those things, without specifying what they are or really justifying what we know about, and expects that to make it all okay. This meeting is turning out to be about as much of a waste of time as I thought."

Re: Metasubject
"Magic academies are not for everyone. They were not for my master, they were not for me, and these students have little to learn from mages who know little to nothing about psionics. It's a rare gift, and should not be neglected."

She gazed steadily at Kei. "As for the Jade Dragon... I did indeed have my own reasons for using that particular location as a lesson aside from the instruction of the children. I am no more manipulating them than students at Gunnir who use their talents to help the institution are being manipulated. They are aware of the choices they make, and of the consequences of angering so many Doman barflies."

"If you really want a reason for the destruction of the Jade Dragon, take this if you will. The Jade Dragon is an icon... a symbol. It's a symbol to the people who killed my master, killed me. They destroyed everything that we had worked for. You should count yourselves lucky that I only destroyed one building."

Her voice remained soft and feminine as she spoke. "If I were to take from the Domans what they took from me, the entire city would be thrown into the plane of hate and forgotten."

"So what do you plan on doing now?" she asked, making her voice sound neutral as she looked Dawn in the eye. "Do you plan to take away more 'symbols'? And as for what the Domans did to you...while I apologise for my tone, I doubt it was the entire city that tried to kill your master."

Lym smiled. He whispered to Eve and Setphan as though he imagined that, were he to speak normally, the women he observed might hear him. "Oh, then again...she's giving hints about who her master is. It sounds like it might be that necromancer after all. But how would that work? Remind me to talk to Yadi about that mess. I need details."

"No. I do not intend any further large-scale destructive plans. I am done with it, and have said my piece as far as the Domans are concerned. Now I will live my life and teach my children. They are trusting me to fulfill certain obligations to them, and I do not intend to betray those expectations."

"That nekojin's pretty bright, I'll give her that..." Stephan comments, "I'm surprised she's getting anything period from that woman."

Kei nodded, in a way that might make an uninformed observer think she was agreeing.

"What are your plans now, then?" she asked, sounding curious. "Do you plan to merely concentrate on your students, or perhaps continue your master's work? You were, after all, his pupil if I understand correctly."

"Not his pupil. His pupil was a fool named Sakhiel who didn't realize the privelege he'd been given. Studying under my master was never an option for me. He was a necromancer, whereas I am a telepath. I could not continue his work if I tried."

As the others were eavesdropping on Kei's conversation with Dawn, they heard a bit of a commotion coming from a nearby market square. There was a loud crash and a lot of shouting. It sounded like a man and a young boy were screaming at each other.

"He seems like a rather ungrateful sort. What did he do, exactly? I assume this was more than mere rudeness."

"It's still the necromancer, alright," commented Lym. "But...argh."

When he heard the crash, Lym started to turn his head that way, but he refused to be distracted. He suspected this was Dawn's doing.

"Eve? Stephan? Check what's going on over there...I'm not looking away till this is done, one way or the other."

Re: re: metasubject
Dawn's mouth tightened into a hard line momentarily. "Despite being telepathically linked to our master, Sakhiel thought to betray him. He wanted to make a deal with Nikumu to become powerful enough to defeat Archmagus Elaith. Instead, he was sacrificed to Nikumu." She seemed unable to completely repress a smile. "My master should have left him there in the plane of hate. Even when resurrected, Sakhiel did not abandon his plans. My master was informed of Sakhiel's disloyalty by, of all people, the opposing side. Needless to say... Sakhiel was punished."

Eve nodded and stood. "Stephan? Maybe we should go take a look."

Kei supressed a shudder, and tried not to think about what his punishment entailed. This was more out of squeamishness than actual pity; considering all she's heard, both parties seemed horrid.

"If this fool was his student, then what was your role in your master's plans? An assistant of some sort, I presume?"

She nodded with a look of mild approval. "Correct," she said simply. "Why do you take such an interest in my master? You are aware that he is no longer living. Your curiosity seems unwarranted in this instance."
