Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Ellie gave her apartment a final inspection. She'd managed to compress everything into to two bags - a smaller one for her computer and related accessories, and a larger one for everything else (but mostly clothes).
She'd decided that if she was staying with these people, there was no point to dress as Tessa. Of course, she still wouldn't tell them her real name, but as a general rule, if someone recognized her it was going to happen no matter what she wore. At the very least, thats how Ellie was justifying leaving her flightsuit crumbled at the bottom of her bag.
As she plugged Colbalt's frequency into the commlink, Ellie continued to examine herself in the mirror, rearranging her curls until she was happy with where each one fell.
"Alright. I've got my things together. Now, where do I find you?" Ellie asked, still partially distracted by her own reflection.
(ooc Im just going to go with she found her way there without too much hassle)
Ellie stood in the hanger bay, and the ship sat before her. This was it - time to step up and learn something new.
She felt a little strange about the idea of just barging in, and instead cautiously approached the ship. "Hello?"

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
The intercom outside the ship came to life. "Hey there. Be out in a second." The front hatch opened after about a minute, and Alema came to the door in loose-fitting black cargo jeans and a white button-up shirt that was probably sized for a man. If Ellie made a point to look her best, it seemed like Cobalt erred on the side of practicality and sexlessness. Of course, this was all probably secondary to the yellow and black mottled python draped over her neck and curling under her chin. It was only a foot or two long, but there was really no telling whether it was fully grown.
"Hey, Tessa. Oh, this is Haly," Alema said, gesturing to the snake around her neck. "If snakes bother you he can stay in my room, but generally he just sticks with me." She stepped aside to let Tessa step into the shuttle. It was clearly a short-range vessel, not intended for comfort on extensive voyages. "If you'll grab yourself a seat we'll head up. You can stash your things wherever you like. We'll only be here a few hours."

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Ellie was momentarily startled by the snake, but got over the shock fairly quickly and adjusted to the creature's presence. It wasn't really her type of pet, but as long as it stayed on Cobalt and not on Ellie, she was okay with it. "No, it's - he's fine." Had Haly been some sort of small fuzzy creature, she would have petted it, but instead settled for smiling at the snake along with a cheerful "hello!"
Walking into the shuttle, they must have made an odd pair, but Ellie didn't notice. In all her self-centered mentality, she paid little attention to the stark contrast between what the two considered to be appropriate attire for the situation - Cobalt in loose, basic clothing, and Ellie in an all white shirt dress that emphasized her petite frame, and looked like she could have just as well been planning to spend the day at a resort in Kor Vella.
Inside the shuttle, Ellie placed her things in a back corner, and sat where indicated. Her knowledge of ships was extremely limited, and didn't have a lot of interest in learning anything useful about them, but she was mildly interested in watchng other people pilot them.
"So is this ship yours? Did you teach yourself to fly?" Ellie asked, not entirely sure it was possible to teach oneself to fly. There were an awful lot of buttons and levers, and the 'try it and see what happens' theory that applied well to slicing didn't seem like it would carry over well to piloting.

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)"The ship isn't mine," Alema answered evenly. "My old ship was destroyed by Imperials. I learned to fly from the owner of my original ship."
Alema wasn't the best pilot, but as far as she knew she was the only one in her family with any idea of what she was doing on the bridge of a ship. Wasn't in the standard courtesan training, along with a whole list of other things that might have gotten her feeling too independent.
"I'm not much good at it, though. You want to see some real piloting, you should watch our Iron Ferrets in action." With a flick of a few more switches, they were off the ground and on their way up to the Revenge.
The flight was only a couple of hours long, and Alema found she didn't have much to say to the girl riding with her. Maybe Alema wasn't old enough for a generation gap, but she still felt she had relatively little in common with this girl. Perhaps it wouldn't matter. She'd teach her what she could teach her, and then let her go on her way.
When they docked, Alema opened the hatch and tossed her backpack over one shoulder. She stood in the doorway waiting for Tessa, and when the girl approached Haly reached out as far from Alema's body as he could reach, his tongue flicking out insistently as he attempted to study this new human. "Haly," Alema whispered. "Manners. It's how we met. He's way too forward with women," she explained.

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Jon Paolo was giving his newly assigned TIE/D a meticulous inspection. These fighters are much too fast to find out you have a loose panel during a flight and this one had been in storage on the Revenge quite awhle. Jon had a set of calipers out, testing the alignment and fit of the hatches when a shuttle set down gently in the docking bay. Curious, he paused for a moment to see who was arriving.
After the prerequisite clanks and hisses that accompany the opening of a pressurized hatch, a petite rutian Twi’lek began to emerge.
“He's way too forward with women,"
“Alema, I wish you wouldn’t tell the new recruits that about me. It deprives them of the fun of finding out for themselves,” Jon said, laughing at his friend.
Alema had found Jon on Tatooine and offered him a new home on the Revenge at a time in his life when it was desperately needed. It wasn’t much of a stretch to say that she saved his life in doing so. It wasn’t only gratitude that he felt for her; however, as they had found they had several surprising things in common. Jon felt very close to her. So close, he often wished they had had a chance to fully explore their possibilities. That hadn’t worked out; but, somewhere in the back of his mind, Jon felt sometime, somewhere…just maybe their chance would come.
Smiling at Alema he asked, “Ok, so who’s the new recruit?”

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
She followed behind Cobalt, belongings in tow. Ellie winced as the snake neared her, squealing a little in alarm.
Slightly embarrassed at her reaction, Ellie managed a small smile. "I guess I'll take his interest as a compliment." She took a few steps sideways to created what she considered to be a safer distance between her and Haly. It hadn't actually touched her, but Ellie wasn't about to take any chances.
Upon exiting the hatch and discovering that there was at least one male aboard the ship, Ellie was silently thankful for her decision to dress nice. She always felt a little self-conscious to be seen by other people when she wasn't wearing makeup.
“Ok, so who’s the new recruit?” Asked the man, who was a dark haired human, and, compared to Ellie's short stature, extremely tall. She hoped he'd be more talkative than Cobalt, who, despite Ellie's attempts to engage her in conversation, didn't seem to have a lot to say.
His question hadn't been so much directed towards her as it was about her, but Ellie answered anyway. "I'm Tessa. It's nice to meet you." She smiled brightly at him. but didn't offer her hand to shake his - it wasn't really her style.

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Alema took a deep breath and ran her finger along the top of Haly's head and down his back. "This is Jon, Tessa. Like he said, I'm Alema here, but Cobalt is still fine. This brings up another issue." She tilted her head, took another brief look at Jon, and turned to close the hatch of the ship. It wasn't hers and it would be rude to leave it more disorderly than she'd found it.
Still stroking the little python curled against her skin, Alema turned to address Tessa, purposefully cutting Jon out of her line of sight and by extension the conversation. At least for now. "This is a pirate ship. I don't need to tell you to be careful with the men around here. Can't imagine anyone doing anything malicious, but they'll be watching you." She glanced from Tessa's toes back up to her face, openly scanning her appearance. "So make sure you're watching them." Edited by: Alema Nilim at: 9/5/07 11:06 pm

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)Alema, huh? Guess I'm not the only one being untruthful here. For a brief moment, Ellie considered admitting to the same white lie, but the urge for full disclosure quickly passed. It was a secret worth keeping. "Alema it is, then."
"This is a pirate ship. I don't need to tell you to be careful with the men around here. Can't imagine anyone doing anything malicious, but they'll be watching you."
Ellie raised an eyebrow at Alema's warning, as the Twi'lek moved to block her view of Jon, and the proceeded to visually inspect Ellie.
It was an... interesting warning, to say the least. He looked harmless enough, but the bad boys always did. And if Alema was concerned - and she LIVED with these people, maybe there was some weight to her warning.
But there was nothing wrong with being friendly, which is all Ellie intended to be. Though perhaps a little more carefully than usual.
After a moment, she nodded. "I'll be careful."
She fell silent a moment, searching for a subject change. "Um. So, anyway... where do I put this?" Ellie asked, nodding her head towards her luggage.

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Jon sighed. Alema’s cold shoulder hurt, but, he didn’t want to make a big deal of it in front of the newest member of the crew. Since he returned from Dantooine with Calina, he’d had trouble getting two words out of Alema.
Jon smiled at the diminutive woman and said, “Very pleased to meet you, Tessa. Welcome to the Revenge. If you have any questions or need help with anything, I’m just a quick call on the comm away.”
Including Alema he continued, “Do you ladies need any help carrying your baggage?”

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Now that was an odd question. It was the kind of accidentally-astute inquiry that deserved a reply in kind. "No, I can handle my baggage on my own. Thank you though," Alema replied, ever courteous. "Tessa's call if she needs your help." She turned to the young woman and handed her a datacard. "This will get you set up in the computer system. You've obviously got a limited authorization but..." Alema smirked and raised one tatooed eyebrow. "...what you do with that authorization is obviously up to you. Same goes for a bunk. The datacard has a schematic of the residential area, and you can pick any room that's open."
She pulled her python off her neck and held him in her palm, letting him curl and twine up the skin of her arm. He was a comforting pet to keep around. She always knew exactly what he wanted and what she could expect from him. He was a good snake.
"I have some duties up on the bridge, but if you need anything you can contact me pretty easily. I'd be a pretty pathetic comms officer if no one could reach me."
Much as Alema might have liked to show Ellie to her room, ask what she wanted for dinner so she had time to plan something, find out if she needed to borrow anything or know where the galley was... it should be the young slicer's job to find her footing on the Revenge, and that meant that she needed to feel like she wasn't being watched.
If that meant Tessa felt abandoned, so much the better for now. She'd be more likely to take the situation into her own hands instead of waiting on Alema to spoonfeed everything to her.
Besides, Alema wanted to see what Tessa did with her system access. She'd taken extra care to lock down anything truly classified, but much of the information was only under normal security. What would Tessa do? Would she be interested in mission logs, ship schematics, destination coordinates, or maybe information on the crew themselves?
It would be a good exercise for Tessa, and one that might make her feel more in control of things on the ship, and that was a positive. Perhaps most of all Alema was just plain curious. With that in mind, Alema headed to the bridge to log into the system. She'd know when Tessa logged in, and from there she could keep an eye on her trainee's exploration during the normal course of her job.

Jon smiled at Alema affectionately. In some ways they were so much alike. It killed him that she was so angry with him.
“Fine, then I’ll get back to work. Tessa it was very nice to meet you. Perhaps we can have a chat over a cup of stimcaf sometime.

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Ellie hesitated a moment, listening to Alema. It looked like she was going to be on her own for a while. "Oh. Okay," Ellie said with a shrug. "Catch you later - and thanks."
She fidgeted with the datacard in her hands as she watched Alema disappear from sight. Being an only child, Ellie was fairly independent, but had been planning on staying close to Alema until she felt more oriented things. Oh well. Exploring is more fun anyway.
"Tessa it was very nice to meet you. Perhaps we can have a chat over a cup of stimcaf sometime."
Ellie nodded as Jon turned back to his work. "Sure," she agreed, cheerfully.
There had been an uncomfortable tension with Alema and Jon in each others presence - and seemingly most the the hostility coming from Alema's end. Ellie couldn't help but be curious as to what all that was about - and with some luck, maybe she'd find out later. She had always had a strong interest in other people's personal lives - which was odd considering the lengths Ellie went to keep her own personal life secret from her work.
But now what? There was a lot to explore, and Ellie wasn't quite sure where to start - especially since the number of people she knew currently stood at two. Might as well dump all this luggage... somewhere.
That presented another problem. What room to pick? She didn't know enough people or enough about the Crimson Ferret's Revenge to really have a preference, other than a desire to not be in a sparsely-populated area of the ship.
Unwilling to wander aimlessly, Ellie took a moment to pull up the map. Hm. The large majority of the names and locations meant nothing to her. Though, there was an open room near Alema's. Well, that's as good as any, isn't it?
Her decision made, Ellie said goodbye to Jon and headed off her to her new temporary home, trying to make a mental map and orient herself.
Reaching the room, Ellie tossed her things on the bed, but didn't bother to unpack anything. The room was nice enough, a little more.. sterile feeling than she was used too, but Ellie had seen worst. It would be better when it looked a little more lived in, but she was happy with it.
It was time to test exactly what the limits of her security clearance was. Ellie assumed the most interesting stuff had been blocked to a level with little hope of seeing it, but there must be something worth looking at. Her computer connected to the ship's system, Ellie began wasn't looking for anything in particular, and jumped back and forth between the data she could access. Truthfully, Ellie was interested in finding out more about the crew, but couldn't help but feel a little creepy about it.
It seemed a bit silly to sit all by herself in her room, even if she was snooping. There had to be somewhere to go and just hang out.
A look at the ship's map again showed more than a few choices. The observation deck seemed like a good possibility for meeting people - or at the very least, an interesting view. With a last glance around her new quarters (and hoping she'd easily find her way back later), she headed for the observation deck, continuing to tap away at her computer as she walked.

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
A deathstick pressed between his lips, Nathaniel Alcine shuffled wearily from his quarters aboard the Revenge to the observation deck. The IF squadron leader couldn't sleep and he was tired of cruising the intermittant HoloNet News connection, hoping for an interesting report.
Tall and lean with the sable hair and crimson eyes that marked him of the Chiss, but tanned, flesh-tone skin that marked him Human, Nate wore casual attire rather than his flightsuit marking him part of the Iron Ferrets. He'd changed earlier after working on the latest modifications to IF #1. Nate was more than glad to have that done; it seemed it was taking forever to ready his ship for their next runs.
Within the Observation Deck, Nathaniel found that he'd have company. He nodded tersely in greeting and stifled a yawn as he stubbed out one deathstick and lit another.

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Her guess had been correct - there was someone new to meet on the Observation Deck. "Hey. I'm Tessa." She grinned, happy to have some company.
Ellie wrinkled her nose slightly at the smell of his deathsticks. She'd never smoked one, and couldn't really understand the appeal. She considered spice as a whole to be mostly harmless, but then again, most spice didn't slowly kill you.
She continued her snooping on her computer, being cautious to keep the screen pointed so only she could see it. Her paranoia was out of habit, not out of concern for Nate's interest in what she was doing - which Ellie assumed was little to none. She'd yet to found anything terribly interesting, but Ellie was cautious not to overstep her boundaries, whatever they may have been, just yet.
"I'm new." As much as Ellie hated being the new kid, it did have it's advantages at times. "What's your name?"

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)"Tessa, huh? Nathaniel Alcine. I run with the Iron Ferrets," he said as his introduction.
He then unceremoniously plopped himself onto a repulsor couch across from Ellie and tilted his head back to look up and out through the transparisteel above.

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)Iron Ferrett? What the hell is that? Something to do with the ship, clearly, but what? She considered asking, but Nate continued talking.
"I couldn't sleep. What's your excuse?"
Ellie raised an eyebrow, puzzled. She hadn't realized it was evening on the ship - or that anyone would be trying to sleep. It hadn't even occurred to her that it would be on a different time than Corellia at all. Even if she had know, it was far too early for Ellie to even thing about sleeping. Easily distracted by the coming and going of other people, nighttime was the only time she could devote full attention to her work.
She shrugged in response. "Just got here. Trying to figure out where everything is... without getting lost. But, the ship is a whole lot larger than I expected it to be, so... we'll see." Ellie was perfectly capable of figuring things out on her own, but had a tendency to portray herself as more helpless than she really was. What was the point of doing everything on your own if someone could be conned into helping you with it?
Silence.
Ellie hated lulls in conversation. On more than one occasion, she'd been accused of being too fond of the sound of her own voice - which despite her repeated denial, held some truth.

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Nathaniel leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. His expression was incredulous.
"What's an Iron Ferret? You've never heard of us?" he exclaimed. "We're only the most elite fighter squadron in the galaxy! We run TIE Defenders that Captain Gray stole from the Empire when he left... or something. Anyway, we're a frakkin' awesome squadron, Tessa! You can't tell me you've never heard of the Iron Ferrets! We've had raids against the Jedi, the Sith... any of this familiar to you?"
He couldn't believe that she could ask this, new or not! It was mind-boggling!

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Laughing at his reaction, she shook her head. "Sorry, doesn't ring a bell." Fighter pilots generally weren't of much concern to Ellie - even famous ones. Anything that didn't directly effect her daily life didn't typically have much thought devoted to it.
"Sounds stellular though." She sat down next to him on the couch, flashing him a big smile. "Is it fun? What's it like?" Lately, Ellie had been making an effort to show more interest in other people, instead of just herself. It was always easier while pretending to be Tessa - listening to other people talk about themselves kept Ellie from getting carried away and blowing her own cover.
On the inside, Ellie was dying to talk about her favorite subject - herself - but unfortunately didn't have too much to say about Tessa.

Nathaniel grinned when Tessa came to sit beside him instead of across from him. He glanced back up out the transparisteel at the view of space they had, then gave her a sidelong look. He folded his arms across his chest.
"It's a job. I mean... I like flying. I'm good at it, and I'm glad that the Iron Ferrets are willing to listen to a kid." He chuckled. "I'm a lot younger than some of them who fly in the squadron. We've been pretty lucky so far. Haven't lost anyone in our runs. I'm glad for that."
He tried to, but failed to manage a yawn. Nate still wasn't tired.
"So, what do you do here now? What hair-brained role did they find for you in the crew?"

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)"... I'm glad that the Iron Ferrets are willing to listen to a kid." He chuckled. "I'm a lot younger than some of them who fly in the squadron..."
She studied him as he talked, briefly wondering what exactly "a lot younger" meant. Ellie couldn't really thing of anyone her age who would refer to themselves as "a kid." Interesting. She refrained from asking, just in case she wouldn't like the answer.
"So, what do you do here now? What hair-brained role did they find for you in the crew?"
She smiled teasingly, and raised an eyebrow. "Normally, I would make you try and guess, but..." Ellie trailed off. "we could be here all night. I'm a slicer - here to get some training from Alema."
Pausing a moment, she grinned. "It's okay, you can laugh if you want to - I know I look like I don't know a heap overflow from a covert channel, or even like I've ever used the Holonet to do anything but watch soap operas."
And it was true. Ellie knew her looks were one of her biggest advantages in slicing. No one ever expected much out of her. Sometimes it bothered her, but for the most part, she didn't mind.
Ellie looked away from Nathaniel, watching the great expanse of stars through the transparisteel. "I'm going to be the best, one day. That's a promise - everyone will know exactly who Tessa Gavit is." with a smile, she turned back to him, and winked. "And you can say you knew me when."

Nathaniel nodded as though he had some idea what Tessa was talking about. He knew what a slicer was, thanks to Zatara's training, but beyond that... he didn't quite understand why she was so jazzed up about it.
"Right. Well, you can say the same too. Should ask me for an autoprint or something," he said with a smirk. "Except I'm already notorious."

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)"Notorious, huh? You look too nice to be notorious." Ellie was being truthful, but she had also said it just to tease him.
She went back to poking around on her computer. "So, as long as I'm asking questions that I should probably already know the answer to... are there a lot of people on the ship? Do you guys always live here? That seems like it would be so weird." Ellie much preferred being planetside to being on a ship. The idea of being confided to a certain space for uncertain amounts of time made her a little uncomfortable.
As she worked, Ellie continued to chatter about not really anything, as she had a bad habit of doing. "Oh, is there some place fun everyone hangs out?" Not that I think you're boring and I'm trying to get away from you or anything. I'm just curious. I'd probably tell you if you were boring me." She paused, considering this. "Actually, no, that wouldn't be very nice, so maybe not." She looked at him, a little wide-eyed. "Sorry. I'll stop rambling now."
Sithspit. Way to make an ass of myself. It was going to hard to get to know anyone without actually telling them anything about herself. She'd never had to spend extended periods of time with people who thought she was Tessa - or even really make much conversation. Forget it. I don't have to be best friends with these people. I'm here to work. I'll just be nice. Don't be Ellie. Be Tessa.

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Tessa had thrown far too many questions at Nathaniel too quickly for him to even hope to catch them all and work out answers. Again, he wasn't stupid, it was just that he was still newer to Basic than most. He paused a moment, trying to look unconcerned, while he tried to figure out what exactly she'd asked.
"I am dull, so that's okay. I think. As for the ship... I don't know. I just deal with the Iron Ferrets, and my sister, so I don't keep track of personnel," Nate replied. If she was fishing for information, she'd landed the wrong pirate. "When we're over Velusia, most go planet-side and have places to stay, or they shuttle back and forth between the cantinas down there, and the ship."
For some reason, he didn't feel it necessary to say that he was one of those types. That he and Devorah had an apartment on Velusia. Or rather, that Dev had an apartment, and she let him live there with her now...

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
Oblivious to having nearly overwhelmed Nathaniel with her babbling, Ellie shook her head, and showed him the ship map she'd be given. "I've got this. Which I hope means I won't get lost too often," she smiled, "but, other than that I think I'm figuring things out on my own. Which is understandable, people have jobs and things to do." she shrugged. "I think I'm a little disoriented with everything, but I’ll figure it out.”
Leaning back, she caught her reflection in the transparisteel, and Ellie's mind drifted away from the conversation and to herself as she twisted her dark curls back and then left them fall back on to her shoulders. She had an embarrassing habit of examining herself in all reflective surfaces, though Ellie rarely noticed she was doing it unless someone pointed it out.
Still partially engrossed in herself, she changed subjects again. “Your sister is here? That must be really fun.” Part of her had always been jealous of people who had siblings. At the very least, it seemed like having a sister or two would have taken a lot of her parents focus from her and put it elsewhere. "Are you guys close?"

Re: Practice makes perfection (Ellie)
A holopicture of a man with short black hair that stood next to a woman with sandy blonde long hair that had been placed into a braid and hung against her right shoulder. Standing between the two people was a young girl with light brown hair that was cut shirt but had a bit of curl at the tips. The three were laughing in the picture and it was clear they were happy.
Calina’s thumb quickly wiped off a tear that fell on to the screen, as she sat on the side of her bed staring down at one of the only images she had of her parents and herself when she was young. Sighing heavily she placed the framed image back on the table that was near her bunk and stood up. Grabbing her chocolate colored leather vest she looked at the reflection in her mirror. So she had fairly tomboyish look what with her pants, shirt, vest and boots but she just liked how the clothing felt against her natural shape.
Leaving her room behind she headed toward the observation deck just to do some thinking. Of course she hadn’t realize that anyone would be there when she arrived. Stopping as she noticed two figures standing there she wondered why anyone beyond herself was up at the time of night or was it day. She could never tell on the ship since there was no setting or raising sun.
“Sorry I didn’t realize anyone was up. Hey Nate what you doing up?” She looked over at the girl and smiled. “I’m guessing you’re new. Sorry if I seem grouchy. Been up late. My name is Calina, pleasure to see another female face around here.” She smiled at the younger girl as she gave her a wink. “Of course not that I’m complaining about the male companion. Just nice to get our numbers up you know?”
